Background of the Study
Malaria remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in regions such as Yobe State, where the prevalence of the disease is high due to favorable climatic conditions for mosquito breeding (World Malaria Report, 2024). Community health nurses (CHNs) play a vital role in malaria control through health education, preventive measures, early diagnosis, and treatment (Usman & Bello, 2023).
CHNs contribute to malaria control by promoting the use of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs), advocating for environmental sanitation, and ensuring timely administration of antimalarial medications (Ahmed et al., 2024). However, challenges such as inadequate staffing, poor access to medical supplies, and limited public awareness hinder the effectiveness of malaria control efforts in Yobe State (Olawale & Hassan, 2024).
This study aims to evaluate the role of community health nurses in malaria control in Yobe State, highlighting their contributions, challenges, and potential areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Despite various malaria control interventions in Yobe State, the disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Limited access to healthcare, poor adherence to preventive measures, and inadequate health education contribute to the persistence of malaria (Adegbite & Yusuf, 2024). Community health nurses are at the forefront of malaria control efforts, yet their impact and challenges have not been extensively studied.
This study seeks to assess the role of CHNs in malaria control, identify challenges affecting their effectiveness, and propose recommendations for strengthening their contributions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the role of community health nurses in malaria control in Yobe State.
2. To identify challenges affecting the effectiveness of community health nurses in malaria prevention.
3. To propose strategies for enhancing the impact of community health nurses in malaria control.
Research Questions
1. What role do community health nurses play in malaria control in Yobe State?
2. What challenges hinder the effectiveness of community health nurses in malaria prevention?
3. What strategies can enhance the contributions of community health nurses to malaria control?
Research Hypotheses
1. Community health nurses play a significant role in malaria control in Yobe State.
2. Limited resources and inadequate training negatively impact the effectiveness of CHNs in malaria prevention.
3. Strengthening training and resource allocation will improve malaria control efforts by CHNs.
Definitions of Terms
• Community Health Nurses (CHNs): Healthcare professionals who provide primary care, health education, and preventive services in community settings.
